The art of the title sequence...
SumCreative have just completed work on the opening titles for CBBC’s new 13 part drama series ‘LEONARDO’. The series, produced by Kindle Entertainment, follows the adventures of the young Leonardo da Vinci, his friends and enemies all set in the hustle and bustle of Renaissance Florence.
The sequence, divided into 8 and 32 second segments, features the cast and exotic setting with a brief to reflect the energy, sense of joy and creativity of the series. Colour, pace, movement and texture were key ingredients to help create the action packed feel that the producers required.
The design team created backgrounds, overlays and 3D objects into which live action clips from the series were composited in After Effects. The footage was heavily treated to give it a painterly look, with the sequence carefully graded achieving a rich colour palette to match the costumes and sets.
Specific hero shots of the young cast and a trained hawk(!) were filmed blue screen on location in South Africa and keyed into the sequence using DS Nitris.
Unfortunately SumCreative couldn’t attend the shoot on location, so test footage was shot in house at Sumners and animatics and storyboards created for the South African crew.
The series is scheduled for transmission in April.
