For the past few years The Royle Family Christmas Special has been as much a part of the U.K's Christmas Day as turkey and the Queen's Speech.
Following on from the Queen Of Sheba (2006) and The New Sofa (2008) this is the third Christmas special that Sumners have been involved in.
The project almost didn't make it to the screen however when a technical issue during the early stages of filming meant that two day's worth of filming were unusable ! This set back didn't hold up shooting more than a couple of days and filming was finished two days behind its original schedule.
Offline editor Ian Wilson worked tirelessly on the edit so as to ensure that he made up for the days that were lost and the programme hit its transmission date on time.
Due to the nature of the programme and the availability of the actors and crew The Royle Family Christmas specials are filmed and edited in a relatively short space of time. This wouldn't be possbile without the effort and dedication from all the team at Sumners.
The finished programme was a tremendous ratings success for the BBC, drawing in 10.2m viewers(BARB). This placed it ahead of Doctor Who in the day's ratings and second behind the Christmas Day episode of Eastenders.
“There's always a high level of anticipation when I know I'm returning to Sumners
- aside from the comfortable facilities in which we work, it's great to see the
familiar faces there that make it so enjoyable!”
